Calamine lotion has been used for ages to treat skin disorders and is used as an anti-itching lotion in many households. It is also prescribed by dermatologists to treat skin conditions such as sunburn, rashes, chicken pox, poison ivy and insect bites. It has anti-inflammatory properties and is mainly a mixture of zinc oxide and ferric oxide. There are lot of variants available in the market today but I have used Lacto Calamine and Caladryl lotion one of which can always be found in my kitty due to their numerous skincare benefits which are listed below.
1. For Oily and Acne Prone Skin
Calamine lotion is a boon for those with an oily and acne prone skin. It is a water based lotion which provides the much needed hydration to oily skin and also treats acne and pimples due to the presence of zinc in it.
2. For Dry and Blotchy Skin
Calamine lotion soothes the irritated skin and heals the blotchy patches, thereby making it softer and smoother. It also exfoliates the skin and helps in removing the dead skin to reveal a healthy complexion.
3. For Insect Bites and Stings
Itching,redness and stinging sensation are the common symptoms when a person is bitten by an insect. It is caused due to the venom or other poisonous substances injected in the skin . Calamine lotion has a calming effect and helps to ease the pain and itchiness.
4. For Bleach Burns
Bleaching is quite common amongst girls nowadays and sometimes either due to the incorrect proportion of mixing the activator or keeping it on the skin for more than the required time, causes burns or black spots . Calamine lotion is very effective in healing the burns and fading the dark spots within a few hours.
5. For Redness and Sunburn
As the lotion is composed of zinc oxide, it helps to protect the skin against tanning.In case you have forgotten to apply your sunscreen before stepping out in the sun and got severe sunburn, then it’s quite effective in treating the redness and peeling of the skin.
6. Acts as a Make Up Base and Primer
Yes you heard it right! The lotion hydrates the skin and provides a smooth base to apply makeup. It also mattifies the skin and keeps the makeup fresh for a longer time. You can use it instead of the expensive primers and also treat your skin with the goodness of calamine.
